Smartwater Viral Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc47LcvIxyI

This video is from earlier this year, it was essentially a viral video about how to create a viral video. Jennifer Aniston was promoting Smartwater and tried to include the common components of viral videos in today's online world. The video now has almost 10 million views, and so it was extremely successful in becoming a "viral" video. I remember thinking when I first saw it what an interesting concept Smartwater used to promote their product, and thought it would relate to our viral video project that we will be doing later on in the semester.

Console.fm - an interesting alternative to Spotify

I frequent electronic dance music blogs, and recently one of them posted about a new website called "Console." When the site was first launched a few months ago, you could only access it by logging in with your Twitter account. Now, however, it seems that anyone can access this website without logging into any sort of social networking site. I think this site is interesting because most of the songs listed under any given genre I have not heard of. It's a really interesting and different way to learn new music, and the song selection cycles daily.

Taxbrain Guerilla Campaign

This is quite old already. During a NASCAR presentation a fan jumps into the car and takes a short ride before he is forced to stop by the security staff. However, all of this has been made up and is nothing more than a very sophisticated guerilla marketing campaign. The staged theft of the NASCAR first appeared on several TV channels (nationwide and local) before it went viral on numerous social media websites. It was so successful because for quite a while most people didn't really know whether it was staged or not.

The New York Times recently ran this article. We were talking today about Sock Puppet reviews, and these students are trying to figure out how to spot a fake.

Spotify Launched in U.S.

Spotify is a music site, similar to Napster (except legal), and allows users to access millions of songs via record companies who provide them. It started in Northern Europe in 2006 and made its way over to the US about a month ago. It also lets you link your account to last.fm so you can add songs, find out what artists you listen to most, and weed out what you do and don't like in either account.

Reddit in Progress

For those of you that aren't familiar with Reddit, you can find a lot of hidden gems throughout the site. However, the real value comes from the comments.

Here, someone posed a simple "what if" question on who would win between the Roman Empire and a Marine division, and one person began writing fiction in the comments about what a situation would look like. Check it out. It's still in progress.

Welcome!

Hi everyone!

Welcome to the blog for MKTG4250 – Social and Online Marketing. Throughout the semester we will be using this forum to exchange links, videos, ideas, etc. that are relevant to the class. I encourage you to post any content related to online marketing and social media that you find interesting. More importantly, I encourage you to comment on the content posted by others in the class. The goal of your posts should be to enhance the learning experience, and exchange ideas that we might not have time to discuss in depth during class. Please remember that as with in-class participation, quality will be valued over quantity.
