I thought it would be interesting to find out in which countries Facebook is not the dominant social media network. The result of my research can be found here:

You should really visit some of these national social networks, you will be astonished and puzzled at the same time. Most of them just look like Facebook with an exotic interface.

Interesting. My guess is that this list is even smaller now, just a year after the survey was done. I know Brazil has been switching to Facebook at an incredible rate, and by now I think it has passed Orkut. I assume other countries will show a similar pattern...
Really interesting. I know a lot of countries had a main social network, like Spain with Twenti (I think that's how it's spelled) but then when Facebook came, it was accessible to more people, which is why I think it takes off in a lot of countries so quickly- it connects people all over the world, it is really well-known, and it doesn't discriminate- meaning you don't have to have someone invite you or you don't have to be in a certain social pool in a country to be able to go on it and sign up.
A lot of the international grad students from China use a different social network than the one listed in that quora post. I know it looks a lot like facebook and it might be called RenRen? I'm not sure.
