A 2-year old company, Fizziology, tracks social media to try to predict how much movies will make on their opening weekends. They pull information from Facebook, Twitter, and other blogs to help determine the amount of general buzz surrounding a movie, and this past summer, their predictions were closer to actual numbers than traditional box office projections. Social media uses have been expanding greatly, but I would have never thought to use them in this way. It struck me as a very inventive way to utilize social media.

I think that over time companies will realize that one of the most useful aspects of social media is that it is a vast source of market research. Now if we could only have access to what happens on Facebook...
As someone who wants to go into the entertainment industry, I find this extremely interesting! I wonder if/when the studio heads will start looking at these numbers seriously.
